Welcome to the page for 'External'

Welcome to the External Page. As External Officer, I am responsible for representing your views within CUSU and the University and reporting back to keep you up to date. I also act as Returning Officer in all JCR and CUSU elections.

While the JCR represents students' interests here in college, I'm here to connect you to your wider representation in CUSU, and through CUSU the NUS. These unions are run by and for us as students and are our best means for dealing with wider issues, improving our educations and lives at university. And as well as representation CUSU provides services such as one-to-one welfare and academic support, CUSUEnts(!) and equipment rental, and in the background it facilitates a lot of the more visible work you see our JCR doing in college. So please do get involved - check out the reports I post here regularly on what's going on at CUSU, voice your opinions and share your ideas, right here on the forums or by emailing me on jcr-external at chu.cam.ac.uk. It's only if we know what you want from your union that we can try to get it, and make a real difference to university life. You'll find regular reports from me about what's going on at CUSU, right here on the forums.

Also feel free to contact me if there's something you'd like to know about CUSU/NUS - if I don't know, I'll do my best to find out - or if you're interested in coming along to CUSU Council meetings (anyone can speak or propose motions/amendments) or CUSU Open Meetings (termly meetings at which all students can vote).

xx Ben Towse

So this is the last of these agenda breakdowns you'll read from me! After this council, Noel will be taking over - I'm sure he'll do a great job.

Council will meet at 19:15 in the Small Exams Hall on the New Museums Site on Monday 8 Feb. All members are welcome to attend and speak. One last time, please give me your opinions so I can represent you as well as possible. Post here or email me at jcr-external@chu.cam.ac.uk. Below is a summary and the full agenda is attached.

xx Ben Towse

2 CUSU referenda are currently running online at http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/elections/ and will close at 23:59 on Tuesday 9 Feb. Make sure you cast your ballot on these issues, both of which will have very significant implications for CUSU and Cambridge students. Find information at that link and those below.

CUSU Council 19-1-10 - NUS affiliation!

xx Ben Towse

EDIT - apologies, I got the venue wrong. It's Keynes Hall, Kings College.

Council Lent I will be at 19:15 on Tuesday, Jan 19th in Keynes Hall, Kings College.

This is a particularly important session of council, with a number of important/controversial issues coming up. Alan and I want to know your views so we can work out how to vote. In particular, we'll be discussing NUS disaffiliation - I'll be seeking opinions on this at the JCR Open Meeting on Monday at 7. For now, here's a summary for your convenience, and the full unabridged agenda and accompanying documents are

Reforming University disciplinary, dismissal, and grievance procedures

xx Ben Towse

Since the Open Meeting of 28 Nov passed the motion (below for reference) opposing the proposed changes to the disciplinary, dismissal, and grievance procedures for University Officers (i.e. academic and academic-related staff), Alan and I have been following your instruction to work out how best we can get the student voice heard in this debate and make a difference. We've been talking to some fellows who oppose the changes, and the head of the union that represents academics in Cambridge, and will probably be working alongside them when the issue progresses in Lent. For now, we were unable to get

Election Results Nov 2009

xx Ben Towse

Results are in! The victorious candidates will officially take office at noon this Saturday 21 Nov.

Congratulations to the winners, and well done to everyone who stood – you all ran great campaigns. And many thanks to our outgoing JCR President and the LBGT Officer for all their work. Grayden has done a great job over the past year as President, and Dan is finishing the last of 3 excellent terms in office he’s dedicated to Churchill.

800 years and no sports centre

xx Ben Towse

In its 800th year, the University of Cambridge still lacks a sports centre - which marks it out as lacking in comparison to most major British universities. CUSU, the Hawks, the Ospreys and various Uni Sports clubs are running a campaign to do something about this - take a look at http://jcr.chu.cam.ac.uk/jcr_issues/pages/?800_years_and_no_sports_centre for more info and how you can help.
