The Website for the Churchill College JCR
Welcome to the External Page. As External Officer, I am responsible for representing your views within CUSU and the University and reporting back to keep you up to date. I also act as Returning Officer in all JCR and CUSU elections. I serve both the JCR and MCR Committees and I maintain communication between the common rooms.
While the JCR and MCR represent students' interests here in college, I'm here to connect you to your wider representation in CUSU, and through CUSU the NUS. These unions are run by and for us as students and are our best means for dealing with wider issues, improving our educations and lives at university. And as well as representation CUSU provides services such as one-to-one welfare and academic support, CUSUEnts(!) and equipment rental, and in the background it facilitates a lot of the more visible work you see our JCR and MCR doing in college. So please do get involved - check out the reports I post here regularly on what's going on at CUSU, voice your opinions and share your ideas, right here on the forums or by emailing me on jcr-external at chu.cam.ac.uk. It's only if we know what you want from your union that we can try to get it, and make a real difference to university life. You'll find regular reports from me about what's going on at CUSU, right here on the forums.
Also feel free to contact me if there's something you'd like to know about CUSU/NUS - if I don't know, I'll do my best to find out - or if you're interested in coming along to CUSU Council meetings (anyone can speak or propose motions/amendments) or CUSU Open Meetings (termly meetings at which all students can vote).
Results are in! The victorious candidates will officially take office at noon this Saturday 21 Nov.
Congratulations to the winners, and well done to everyone who stood – you all ran great campaigns. And many thanks to our outgoing JCR President and the LBGT Officer for all their work. Grayden has done a great job over the past year as President, and Dan is finishing the last of 3 excellent terms in office he’s dedicated to Churchill.

EDIT: Extra motion added - see second post
Council Michaelmas III will be at 19:15 on Monday, Nov 16th in the CUSU Council Chamber on New Museums Site (the venue formerly known as the Small Exams Hall)
I've tried to condense the motions down into bitesize summaries for your convenience. As usual the full unabridged agenda and accompanying documents are attached and I want to know your views so I can work out how to vote. Post here or contact me at jcr-external@chu.cam.ac.uk (please let me know if you're MCR or JCR. MCR members can also speak with
Hi everyone
If you disagree with any of your reps' votes, a JCR Open Meeting motion may be used to force us to change them if passed before the next CUSU Council (i.e. at hustings on 14 Nov).
The CUSU sabbatical officers (sabbs) called this meeting to seek a mandate to negotiate with the Grad Union (GU) and the University, with the aim of obtaining a block grant of funding from the University and a professional caseworker to deal with students welfare/academic problems one-on-one (previously the Education, Welfare and Women's sabbs have done this, but they are massively
A large number of positions within CUSU are not elected cross-campus by all students, but by CUSU Council. A number are coming up for vote at the council meeting next Monday 16 Nov. These are part-time positions that you take on alongside your studies, much like being on the MCR or JCR Committee. Running does not involve a big song and dance - you just show up at the meeting ready to speak for about 90 seconds on why you should be elected, and maybe to answer some questions. A lot of these are likely to be unopposed too! None

Since this was an extremely uncontroversial council, there's not much to say and this is just a record of votes - the agenda was explained at http://jcr.chu.cam.ac.uk/theforum/index.php?topic=3685. If you want more detail on questions that were asked and clarified concerning any of the motions, check out the unabridged minutes:

In the forthcoming Winston and at the Open Meeting on 12/10/09, reports and plans from the committee on the previous and coming term are/were presented. As promised in mine, here is some more detail on some of the things I mentioned very briefly, on the off-chance that anyone wants some specific info:
Easter Term
• There were rumblings of a CUSU-GU merger. It’s unclear at this time whether this will get anywhere – the GU seem reluctant. Presently, graduates probably get superior provision as they benefit from two organisations, and the GU is disproportionately well-funded. [it now appears that this
In its 800th year, the University of Cambridge still lacks a sports centre - which marks it out as lacking in comparison to most major British universities. CUSU, the Hawks, the Ospreys and various Uni Sports clubs are running a campaign to do something about this - take a look at http://jcr.chu.cam.ac.uk/jcr_issues/pages/?800_years_and_no_sports_centre for more info and how you can help.
